The 40 Greatest Guitar Albums Of 1967 라는 제목으로 기타플레이어 매거진 2007년 4월호에 소개된 앨범들 중 지미의 앨범들도 소개되었다. 지미의 스튜디오 정규앨범 1집과 2집이 모두 1967년에 출간 되었구나.. 1집의 수록곡들이 이미 발표 전에 라이브에서 연주되던 곡들이라고 하더라도 2집에서 보여준 곡의 퀄리티를 보면 1년 안에 그런 레코딩을 해 낼 수 있었다는 것은 역시 지미구나.. 라고 할 수 밖에 없다. 원문보기

1967년도의 수 많은 앨범들이 시대에 걸 맞는 소리를 내었지만 Are You Experienced는 그렇지 않았다. 이 앨범에는 Summer of Love와 같은 전형적인 사운드라고는 찾아볼 수 없다. 즉, 시타 사운드나 버블껌 멜로디, 보드빌 튠 따위는 어디에도 없다. 구색 맞추기용 트랙 하나 없이 전부 죽여주는 트랙들로만 채워졌다. 모든 트랙은 잉글랜드의 여러 스튜디오에서 이루어졌는데 (Pye, Regent, Kingway, Olympic 등) 실제로 Are You Experienced 가 녹음된 스피드는 놀랄만하다. 헨드릭스는 1966년 9월 24일 런던에 도착했으며 같은 해 10월 5일 처음으로 밋치 미첼(Mitch Mitchell)과 노엘 레딩(Noel Redding)과 함께 플레이했다. (대부분 프랑스에서 이루어진) 몇 번의 기그를 마치고 밴드는 10월 23일 킹웨이 스튜디오에서 “Hey Joe”를 녹음한다. 그러니 한 달도 안 되어서 헨드릭스와 익스피리언스는 일렉트릭 기타의 가장 강력한 성명이 될 창조적인 과정을 시작한 것이다. 물론 이 때는 아직 “Purple Haze”는 곡을 쓰지도 않았을 때다.
4트랙에 테이프 딜레이, 컴프레션, EQ, 및 패닝 “이펙트”를 녹음한 Are You Experienced 는 펜더 스트라토캐스터(로즈우드 프렛보드)를 마샬 스택에 연결한 클래식한 헨드릭스 셋업을 보여준다. 이 즈음 런던 밖의 장소에서 기그를 하던 중, 1966년 12월 Chiselhurst Caves라고 불리는 장소에서 한 젊은 전자공학도이자 마약 사용자인 로저 메이어는 헨드릭스에게 연주한 음보다 한 옥타브 높은 음이 재생되는 몽롱한 프리퀀시 더블러 장치를 준다. 이 박스는 뒤에 옥타비아(Octavia)라고 불리게 된다. 옥타비아 소리는 앨범 전체에서 들을 수 있는데 가장 두드러지는 곡은 “Fire”와 “Purple Haze”이다 (솔로를 잘 들어보면 느슨한 스트링의 메스꺼운 사운드가 넘쳐난다!). “지미는 모디파이한 아비터 퍼즈 페이스도 사용했다”고 로저 메이어는 말한다, “그리고 그 밖에 내가 만들어준 여러 디스토션과 드라이버들을 세션에 사용했다.”
Are You Experienced 앨범이 “I Don’t Live Today,” “Love or Confusion,” “Manic Depression(25와트 셀레스천 스피커가 엄청난 볼륨 때문에 산산조각이 난다)”와 같이 이전에는 들어보지 못했던 사운드의 곡들로 인해서 사람들의 입을 다물지 못하게 했지만, 헨드릭스가 가진 진정한 재능의 깊이는 보다 부드러운 트랙들에서 보다 잘 드러난다. “The Wind Cries Mary”는 프로듀서인 채스 챈들러에 의하면 20분만에 녹음된 곡으로, 헨드릭스가 커티스 메이필드와 같은 6-스트링 소울 브라더의 컴핑을 어떻게 응용해서 이를 자신만의 스타일로 변화시키는가를 잘 보여주는 교과서적인 사례이다. 나머지 곡들과 동떨어진 트랙은 “May This Be Love”로 헨드릭스는 반짝이는 차임과 같은 스트랫의 톤으로 가장 서정적이면서 간결한 멜로디로 이루어진 솔로를 들려준다. 하지만 이 영원한 데뷔 앨범이 보다 놀라운 것은 헨드릭스가 그 시대에 Chitlin’ Circuit이라 불리는 무대에서 보컬리스트들의 반주를 하고 블루스와 R&B 곡들을 연주하며 기량을 연마했던 시대에서 탄생했다는 점이다. 그 뒤 홀연히 쿵 하고 나타난 첫 번째 앨범의 클래식한 곡들과 다른 세상에서 온 듯한 톤 그리고 완벽한 형태의 기타 스타일은 40여 년이 지난 지금에도 여전히 신선한 소리를 들려준다. —DF

Axis: Bold as Love

Less than seven lunar orbits after crashing into the collective American conscious via his earth-shattering debut album, Jimi Hendrix returned with another godly offering. Like its predecessor, Axis: Bold as Love was recorded on a 4-track tape machine with producer/manager Chas Chandler and engineer Eddie Kramer. Ultimately, Axis is a more sophisticated batch of galactic tracks with concise arrangements and a greater emphasis on finesse.
“EXP” is a bizarre fictional radio broadcast about UFOs that gives way to a whirlwind of fuzz and whammied feedback cries. Splashes of sonic color ripple and fade unexpectedly into the jazzy wah-wah swing of “Up from the Skies.” This was America’s first exposure to a Hendrix wah sound, and Hendrix’s first use of a wah pedal on record. Hendrix’s Stratocaster tones on Axis were captured in stereo through two 100-watt Marshall stacks. A Hagstrom 8-string bass adds extra rumble to the pentatonic riff on “Spanish Castle Magic,” although reports conflict about whether Noel Redding played it or if Hendrix layered the bass himself. Jimi’s R&B background shines on “Wait Until Tomorrow,” which is notable for its complete lack of lead guitar. “Little Wing” is one of the most precious jewels in the guitar song crown. Everyone from SRV to Pearl Jam has aped the intro figure’s chordal trills. A Leslie rotary speaker facilitated the dreamy, watery tone, and it sounds particularly dripping over the add9 chords of the turnaround. “Castles Made of Sand” is the upbeat cousin of “Little Wing,” and it’s laced throughout with a backwards guitar track that is brought to the fore to create a bittersweet solo. The wah guitar rhythm to “Little Miss Lover” is Hendrix at his sexed-up, funky best. “Bold as Love” is a grand ending statement, and the lead tone is especially creamy. Effects guru Roger Mayer told GP in 1976, “The fuzz box used for ‘Bold as Love’ was unique because it had a very smooth sound and incredibly long sustain. It was never used again.”
Hendrix lost the master mix of side A just before the album was to be pressed, and it had to be redone in a single marathon session. Even so, the Experience’s middle child is Jimi’s perfect 6-string storm. Somewhere between the immediacy of Are You Experienced and the studio wonder of Electric Ladyland lays Axis: Bold as Love.
